Five Things #91

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. I love these hyper-realistic portraits by Emanuele Dascanio.

  2. More wisdom from Derek Sivers (everything he writes is fantastic): Rock stars have a boss?

  3. A student at Oxford University captured a photo of a single atom with a normal camera.

  4. The best Rube Goldberg machine I've seen... and it only took 3 months to make!

  5. I'm going to shut up about Nils Frahm after today's post. But as I'm seeing him play at the Barbican on Friday he can have one more mention! In this mini-documentary by Crack Magazine (only 12 minutes long), Nils talks about his creative process, his new studio and performs Sunson from his latest album.

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. This is a little mindblowing. Those strawberries aren’t red!

  2. Yesterday, as I ate my dinner I watched SpaceX launch its massive Falcon Heavy rocket for the first time. And now there is a red Tesla Roadster flying around in space! Quite incredible, what a time to be alive. Make sure you check out the photos and videos.

  3. The glasses of the future? I’m not sure whether I’d actually want these or want to have a conversation with someone who’s wearing them. But saying that, I once said that I’d never want an iPhone…

  4. Science says willpower is overrated. Now what?

  5. Nils Frahm’s new album All Melody is out and it’s REALLY good.

That's all for this week. If you enjoyed it, subscribe and you'll get the next one delivered to your inbox.

ps. There'll be no Five Things next week as I'll be on holiday. But fear not, Five Things will return the following week!

Five Things #89

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. Putting things into perspective: The mass of many objects in grams

  2. A fantastic episode of the You Are Not So Smart podcast on the Backfire Effect

  3. Another reason to leave Facebook: Growing apart and losing touch is human and healthy

  4. Spaced learning = good. Cramming = bad: How To Teach Your Brain Something It Won’t Forget A Week Later

  5. I’ve come across Poppy Ackroyd’s music in various Spotify playlists but only just got around to listening to her albums. They are all great, though I particularly like Feathers.

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. So “get out of jail free” cards are an actual thing?!

  2. An interesting musical analysis of Radiohead and Lana Del Rey’s plagiarism dispute. Her song, Get Free, has significant musical similarities to Radiohead’s song Creep.

  3. Attach a very expensive camera to the base of a LearJet, fly around for a bit and you might end up with something like this. Stunning!

  4. A great piece on Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies and the underlying blockchain technology that makes it all possible.

  5. My pals, Druids, have just released their latest EP Up To Mars. We had a lot of fun making the video for the title track so give it a watch and help spread it around the internet by hitting the share button!

Five Things #87

Every Wednesday I share five things I've liked and think you might like too. Here are this week’s Five Things…

  1. A fascinating and meaty discussion (just over 3 hours long) between Sam Harris and Anil K. Seth on the self, consciousness, AI and much more. Possibly my favourite episode of Sam’s podcast.

  2. What a collection! 22 Of The Most Extraordinary Science Photos Of 2017

  3. This is quite the long read and a pretty disturbing one at that. “America invented the three-digit credit score. Now companies in China are taking the idea to the extreme, using big data to track and rank what you do—your purchases, your pastimes, your mistakes.”

  4. Food for thought from legendary, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman: “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.” I highly recommend his book Surely You’re Joking Mr Feynman

  5. This week’s musical recommendation is Charcoal by Brambles. I find listening to music with words very distracting when I’m working, so ambient music like this gets a lot of airtime when at home. Another wonderful discovery courtesy of Spotify’s Daily Mix playlists!
