Hand Coordination Workout #1

Preview

This is the first in a series of posts I’ll be doing on hand coordination.

In 1-3, each hand plays separately, so not much coordination involved there. Focus on getting the sticks to bounce in a straight line, with the stick finishing at the same point that it started — if it starts at 90°, it finishes at 90°. Make sure you’re keeping a consistent rhythm. You play the “1 e +” and rest on the “a”.

Where things get tricky is in 4 & 5. Your goal with these exercises is to get both hands working together — no flams! Be strict with yourself and take it slow.

As always, I recommend practicing with a metronome. Start at a slow tempo and gradually increase the speed.

In part two, we take these exercises to the drum kit.
